Sports are organized, competitive physical games and physical activities. All sports activities are potentially competitive. This is the main difference between recreational, leisure or even social games. As a venue of competition, sports may develop self-confidence and skill sets that are important in everyday life. This is why sports form such an important part of everyday life.
The physical activity involved in sports requires energy, speed and agility that are required to be competitive in any sport. In contrast, recreational sports involve physical activities that are relaxed and often don’t require a great deal of energy or speed. They therefore allow people to relax and enjoy themselves while engaging in leisure activities. There is little comparison between motor skills and athletic ability in recreational sports. Professional sports events and athletic achievements are the ultimate example of self-motivation through sport.
In both types of sport, skill and knowledge are developed through the application of physical exertion. Professional sports include such sports as weight lifting, cycling, track and field, golf, wrestling and swimming. In most sports, speed is paramount. It may not be possible to sprint for long distances in many sports but being able to move at a fast pace will make up for this. For example, a golfer may not be able to swing a golf club as quickly as a football receiver, but the golfer is able to make the shot.
While it may seem there is little link between skills and physical activity, sports do teach people to think and make decisions. In most high schools, students participate in different sports activities. Most of these involve running, jumping, playing basketball or football, participating in track and field events and so on. Athletic events also encourage the development of social interaction, team spirit and responsibility for others. These things are all important life skills that will be used in everyday life.
Many children participate in organized sports because they have a particular sports team to join when they enter school. A game may require the child to sprint, throw a ball or run to the basket. If these skills are learned in a physical activity, they will be used in other school-related activities as well. For example, if the child is interested in football, they will likely enjoy the organized sports activities that they will engage in during their high school years. They may be required to participate in special teams or may be required to play on a recreational team.
Although most physical activity promotes a healthy lifestyle, it is important for parents and children to be aware of potential dangers associated with organized sports. Most sports injuries are usually caused by excessive heat exhaustion or injury to the tendons, ligaments, muscles and bones. This can lead to chronic pain and a poor quality of life.
