The word “health” has many meanings, but for this article, I will only deal with a single concept: the state of health. According to the World Bank, about 80 percent of a person’s health is a result of their genes, and fifteen percent comes from the type of care they receive. There are many other factors that can influence one’s health, though, such as economic status and social conditions.

The body’s ability to sustain homeostasis is also an important component of being healthy. In addition to physical and mental capacities, mental and emotional well-being are important indicators of a person’s quality of life. Hence, maintaining mental and emotional health is a vital component of maintaining good health.

The ‘complete health’ concept is an unrealistic ideal and is not helpful. Few people will ever experience perfect well-being throughout their lives, and so the concept of ‘complete health’ is counterproductive. A person’s ability to live a long, fulfilling life is dependent on the innate qualities of that person. Moreover, this ‘complete health’ concept contributes to the over-medicalisation of society. However, it is important to note that the state of health reflects a person’s individuality, and it is important to acknowledge this fact.
The WHO’s definition of health was first defined in 1948 and still has a wide range of definitions. It is important to focus on a person’s physical capacity, but also their emotional and social capacities. Essentially, health is a resource for life. It is the absence of disease and the ability to cope with stress and a person’s physical capacities. It includes the ability to learn, adapt, and maintain relationships. The third definition of health emphasizes the ability to maintain self-manage and be resilient.
The ‘complete health’ concept is unattainable. Rather than focusing on the benefits of an overall healthy lifestyle, it focuses on the ability to live a full life. While it may be tempting to focus on your physical capacity and ‘complete health’, these definitions are unrealistic and fail to reflect the reality of life. It also ignores the importance of mental and emotional wellbeing for the wellbeing of an individual. If your physical capacity is impaired, then you should consider health in a wider context.
