Health is a subjective state of psychological, physical and social well being where infirmity and illness are absent. A wide variety of definitions are used for such purposes over the years. Some people define health as the condition of the body and mind wherein the person is psychologically and physically capable to undertake the activities of daily life. On the other hand, another definition regards health as the capacity to live independently. It also involves having the ability to cope with the changing situations in one’s surroundings.
Mental health is considered as a key element of healthy living. Some psychologists argue that there are two main aspects of mental health: cognitive and emotional well-being. The former deals with the thoughts, beliefs, motivation and knowledge relevant to the person’s current functioning and emotional well-being reflects aspects such as the person’s relationships, emotions, behavior, experiences, and interpersonal interactions. It also includes aspects related to one’s occupational environment and professional support system.
Psychological well-being on the other hand, takes into account the influences of external factors that can affect a person’s well-being such as interpersonal relationships, work and relationships, physical environments, and social conditions. External factors such as climate, food and work environments, are known to influence health. These external factors can exert direct or indirect biological, social and physiological consequences. For instance, poor nutrition, work stress, occupational exposure to chemicals, and the presence of environmental hazards can all have an effect on the functioning of the brain and contribute to poor well-being.
In addition, studies have shown that genetics, early life experiences and family history are important influences to health. These are known as risk factors since they can increase the likelihood of acquiring health problems. These factors that can be controlled or modified include the physical and mental health, emotional well-being, and the lifestyle. Family history traits that consist of low intellectual capacity and substance abuse are known to be risk factors for poor health and wellness. These traits are also associated with greater risks of getting ill and developing illnesses such as cancer.
Poor general health can result from either heredity or medical care. Heredity is passed down from parents to children. Medical care is provided to individuals in their communities. However, these two cannot be avoided if they are to achieve optimal well-being and health. If medical care is not readily available to a family, then overall health and wellness are going to be compromised.
It is imperative that we continue to educate the population about wellness and the need to practice preventive care. With all the new diseases being created each day, it is up to each individual to make sure that they are healthy and exercising daily. Healthy lifestyles will not only improve health care but also to reduce health-related costs. By practicing prevention, we can also help keep costs down for health care. There is nothing more important than keeping your body healthy. Make your life and your family’s life better through a healthy lifestyle.
