The Responsibilities of a Medical Specialist
Health is a condition of mental, physical and social wellbeing where infirmity and illness are absent. It is the combination of an individuals physiological functions, personality and values that determine the quality of his life. The word “health” is derived from Greek words Hapyrodos and Phytos which mean harmony and health.
Mental health refers to the ability to cope with everyday demands and to be successful in life. The physical health is the ability to maintain good health. A person with poor health has below average mental health. In addition, a person who is mentally ill also has below average physical health, for two reasons: first, poor physical fitness limits the functioning of the mind; and second, unhealthy mental fitness leads to depression, which is a major cause of sickness. Hence, to promote and maintain good mental health and physical fitness, we need to combine diet and lifestyle counseling along with health education. We should try to improve the family environment so that people have a positive influence over their health.
Health education deals with the development of healthy behaviors that lead to the fulfillment of the need of people for health. It teaches the basic principles of caring for our bodies, minds, and spirits that are essential for achieving total well-being. Health education also teaches about the ways to ensure optimal functioning of the mind and therefore promote the achievement of good mental health and physical well-being. A sound understanding of cancer, diabetes, nutrition, preventive care, and medical ethics are part of this field.
